Sinai Hospital is the medical home for an especially underserved community for whom social support and patient education about sickle cell disease is critical. Southern Park Heights, the neighborhood directly adjacent to the hospital, is 96.1% Black or African American. The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology provides services to this population. The team includes a social worker who works with the most critically ill children, especially with supportive counseling when they are inpatients. She is also able to assess barriers to treatment and adherence for some seriously ill patients when they miss important medical appointments.
